Egypt Revamps Cave Museum

Following a seven-year renovation plan, Rommel’s Cave Museum in Mersa Matruh has recently opened its doors to visitors.

The cave which is now home to a small museum was used by Erwin Rommel, one of Germany’s most respected military leaders in World War II also known as Desert Fox and features a collection of weapons, shells and military equipment used during the world as well as military attire and maps.

Egypt’s Ministry of Antiquities, in cooperation with Matrouh Governorate, started the renovation of the museum in 2010, with the aim to preserve Egypt’s unique cultural and historical heritage while also attracting more German visitors to the country.
